FLY FISHING REPORT

June 22, 2008

FOR CURRENT & FORECASTED FLOWS LINK TO THE SITES AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE.

Looks like most all rivers and streams are starting to drop after an exceptionally long runoff. That's good news for every one fishing July and through the rest of the summer!

Rivers and streams will continue to run high and off color for the next week or so but then flows should drop quickly, water temps will warm up and the dry flies start to hatch, We have already seen a few hatches of caddis, stone flies, Pale Morning Duns and Blue Wing Olives.

Taylor River continues to be the clearest river around for many miles. Flows have been even at 680 Cubic feet per second for the last 17 days. Tricky wading and fast pocket water fishing, Rainbows and Browns are being caught on copper johns 10-18, red, green & black. Lots of active Green Drake nymphs 12-14, Black North Fork Stone, Zug Bugs & Gabriell's Trumpets. Some PMD & BWO hatches 16-18 Extended Body patterns working well during hatches. Fish will also rise to orange stimulators 10-16, if not add a dropper fly like a pheasant tail 12-18 or a twenty incher 10-14. Stripping streamers off the banks can be very entertaining my favorite patterns are the Belldar Cone Buggers in 4-8's Skunk, red/black, olive also the Vanilla cone bugger in 4-8.

The Catch & Release 1/4 mile below Taylor Reservoir has been busy but fishing well. Try Mysis shrimp like Stalcup's extended tail 14-20, Miracle Nymphs 16-20, WD-40's & RS-2's 18-24 in Gray and olive, Pheasant Tails 18-24.

The Gunnison remains high & fast now flows are starting to drop trout will start moving off the banks. Some wade fishing can be done closer to Blue Mesa at Coopers and Never Sink access areas.

Good high water/off color patterns are big and bright; San Juan worms 8-12 red, pink & purple, copper johns 8-14 red, copper, silver, blue, chartreuse and purple, twenty inchers 6-12. Streamers like the Belldar cone Buggers size 4 red, orange, yellow and skunk. For heavier artillery try our Sculpzilla's & Trina's Bullet Head patterns, both are heavy streamers and have articulated bodies with the hook hidden in the tail size 4 in white, natural and black (don't use your 3 weight)!

The East River, Spring Creek, Cement Creek and the Lake Fork are all dropping quick.

Taylor & Blue Mesa reservoir have been fishing very well. Trout, lakers, pike and perch have been caught even from the banks. Also good fishing at the Roaring Judy Hatchery Ponds. Some high country streams to the south are fishing well and close to normal flows.

Our fly bins are full and we have added dozens of new patterns to what is already the largest selection in the Valley so stop by and visit.

Tight lines,
